Many years ago when choosing my career I investigated Logistics as a path for me and I am very glad that I made that choice. 27 years later I am still enjoying the many challenges the industry throws up.
My first step to a career was to enrol on the BSc Hons Transport & Distribution course at Huddersfield Polytechnic where I gained my degree qualification.
After graduating I embarked on a career that included employment with a number of leading 3rd party logistics organisations including GIST, Yusen Logistics & Li Feung. I also worked from an “own account” perspective as Logistics Manager for Makita UK Ltd. These roles encompassed a variety of operations, market sectors and I progressed from a Transport Supervisor to Logistics Manager.
In 2013 my career took another path, still within Logistics but as a Project Manager. I joined the General Merchandise Logistics department at Marks and Spencer. At M&S, I managed 2 projects which were all connected to the move to a Single Tier Logistics Network. During this period I was awarded the Prince 2, Practicioner & Foundation, qualification which I used within M&S and in subsequent assignments.
My next project role was on behalf of XPO Logistics / House of Fraser where I managed the installation of an automated solution for the E-commerce operation in Milton Keynes. Following its successful start up, I worked from October to December 2015 managing the automated section of the Operation. This period covered Black Friday and the Xmas peak trading period.
From October to December 2016 I worked at Bibby Distribution as Interim General Manager at their Corby site. My brief was to keep the site running through peak for a 28,000 pallet capacity site on behalf of 5 major food customers. This was a role where I utilised my operational skills gained over many years in Logistics.
The task that I was given was successfully completed and the site delivered the service required over the crucial peak period.
After a short break I joined Homebase / Bunnings as an IT Supply Chain PM in February 2016. I worked at Homebase for 9 months managing a variety of projects. These covered the IT elements of Supply Chain Projects including 2 Cross Docking Projects and the Home Delivery Separation from Argos. The bulk of my time at Homebase was managing the IT elements of the website replatforming project. On this project the website moved from an IBM platform to one hosted by Haylix. All projects were successfully delivered before the IT split from Home Retail Group.
In November 2017 I joined DHL Supply Chain as a PM at their Primark site in Thrapston. Primark were changing the WMS from Unison to JDA and I was responsible for delivering the following elements of the project:- UAT, Training, Device Verification Testing, Intergration Verification Testing, Cutover, Go - Live and Hypercare.
This project was successfully delivered and the site is now operating the JDA WMS. There was no disruption to service during the transition and the site is operating efficiently and to the required levels that Primark require.
Due to the success of that project, I was asked to return to DHL. On this occasion I managed 2 projects within the Network Logistics & Transport division of the organisation. The major project was to migrate the Goodyear Operation from its location in Rugby to another DHL site at Hams Hall. The workstreams involved in this project included IT, Operations, HR, H&S & Facilities. I also liaised very closely with the client on a weekly basis in review meetings.
The stock migration & systemic cutover to the new site worked seamlessly and orders were despatched to the customers with zero disruption.
Following this successful project, I was re - engaged by DHL for a further period. During this period I am managing 3 projects. Firstly the people changes for a major retail client of DHL, secondly the Oracle implementation for another retail client and thirdly the closure of one warehouse and migration to the main warehouse operation for another retail client.
I have successfully integrated my skills and experiences within Logistics to those of a Project Manager and have made positive and long lasting contributions to all the positions I have held.
On a personal level I am passionate about sports development and the positive impact that it has upon the health and wellbeing of an indivual. I have raised over £100,000 to develop Rugby League within Northamptonshire & Buckinghamshire. In 2009 I was awarded the National Volunteer Coordinator of the Year award and I received the award on the famous Wembley turf before the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final.
